Ridurre il fabbisogno di riscaldamento e raffreddamento tramite energia fossile è una delle sfide più grandi, la cui domanda rappresenta quasi la metà del consumo energetico globale, con conseguenti complicate questioni climatiche e ambientali. Qui dimostriamo un dispositivo di gestione termica radiativa a doppia modalità ad alte prestazioni, con commutazione automatica intelligente e a energia zero. Percependo che la temperatura modula spontaneamente le caratteristiche elettromagnetiche stesse, il dispositivo raggiunge ~859,8 W m−2 di potenza di riscaldamento media (∼91% dell'efficienza di conversione solare-termica) a freddo e ~126,0 W m−2 di potenza di raffreddamento media a caldo, senza alcun consumo di energia esterna durante l'intero processo. Un dispositivo così scalabile ed economico potrebbe realizzare un controllo della temperatura bidirezionale attorno alla zona termica confortevole della vita umana. Una dimostrazione pratica mostra che la fluttuazione della temperatura è ridotta di ~21 K rispetto alla piastra in rame. Le previsioni numeriche indicano che questo vero dispositivo di gestione termica a doppia modalità a energia zero ha un enorme potenziale per il risparmio energetico durante tutto l’anno in tutto il mondo e fornisce una soluzione fattibile per realizzare l’obiettivo di Net Zero Carbon 2050.
La gestione termica svolge un ruolo importante nelle attività umane, dai milioni di metri cubi di strutture create dall'uomo1 ai circuiti integrati su scala micro e nano2, e dai veicoli spaziali che volano nello spazio3 ai sommergibili con equipaggio nelle profondità marine4. Sono state sviluppate varie tecnologie di gestione termica in base a requisiti diversi5,6,7. Tuttavia, la maggior parte di essi raggiunge un controllo della temperatura ad alte prestazioni a scapito del consumo di energia, eventualmente di energia fossile. I rapporti hanno sottolineato che la domanda globale totale di energia primaria è vicina a 15 miliardi di tonnellate equivalenti di petrolio nel 20198 e quasi il 50% del consumo energetico viene utilizzato esclusivamente per il riscaldamento e il raffreddamento quotidiano9. Ciò fa sì che la crescente crisi energetica continui a peggiorare. Nel frattempo, con il rapido aumento dei gas serra prodotti dalla combustione di combustibili fossili, negli ultimi anni si sono verificati con frequenza crescente in tutto il mondo condizioni meteorologiche estreme, come caldo intenso e freddo intenso10. Pertanto, è particolarmente importante e imperativo sviluppare varie tecnologie fattibili di gestione termica ad alte prestazioni con un consumo energetico basso o addirittura nullo, in grado di ridurre la domanda di energia fossile e ulteriori emissioni di gas serra.
La gestione termica radiativa è considerata una piattaforma promettente per il riscaldamento e il raffreddamento senza consumo di energia esterna, attirando sempre più attenzione11. La questione più impegnativa per realizzare questo obiettivo è ottimizzare lo spettro elettromagnetico unico dei materiali di gestione termica, massimizzando l'utilizzo sia dell'inesauribile fonte di calore radiativo (cioè il sole, ~5800 K) sia della fonte fredda (cioè lo spazio esterno, ~3 K) in natura. Più in particolare, per un riscaldamento solare ideale, i materiali dovrebbero avere un elevato assorbimento nell’intervallo di lunghezze d’onda compreso tra 0,2 e 2,5 μm e una bassa emissività nell’intervallo di lunghezze d’onda > 2,5 μm, determinata dallo spettro della luce solare e dalla legge sulla radiazione del corpo nero12. Al contrario, per un raffreddamento radiativo ideale, specialmente nel raffreddamento radiativo subambientale diurno, ci si aspetta che i materiali riflettano efficientemente la radiazione solare (0,2–2,5 μm) e abbiano anche una forte emissione selettiva nel medio infrarosso nello specifico intervallo di lunghezze d'onda dell'atmosfera trasparente. finestra (8–13 μm) (Fig. 1)13. Si noti che una serie di studi sul riscaldamento solare e sul raffreddamento radiativo separatamente/indipendentemente hanno compiuto grandi sforzi per comprendere a fondo il meccanismo scientifico e sviluppare materiali ad alta efficienza14,15,16,17,18,19,20. Tuttavia, nel mondo reale, quasi tutti gli scenari ambientali presentano la sfida che gli oggetti si trovano in un ambiente piuttosto dinamico e variabile, inclusa la fluttuazione negli aspetti di spazio, tempo, giorno e stagione, temperatura, ecc. Ciò significa che Il riscaldamento solare fisso o il raffrescamento radiativo non sono entrambi del tutto adatti all'ambiente dinamico. Prendendo come esempio il riscaldamento solare, il riscaldamento indesiderato aumenterà il consumo di energia per il raffreddamento nella stagione calda e potrebbe addirittura compensare il risparmio energetico del riscaldamento nella stagione fredda. Lo stesso vale per il raffreddamento radiativo. Pertanto, per l'utilizzo pratico, è necessario un sistema di gestione termica, in grado di possedere entrambi i due spettri elettromagnetici opposti e di passare automaticamente/intelligentemente alla modalità corretta rispondendo all'ambiente dinamico.
